Is a 30-year veteran extermination in the USA and Canada, I’ve encountered numerous unwelcome posts in homes across the continent. One of the most persistent and elusive is the silverfish, a creature that can cause quite a stir in your living spaces. Today, we’ll delve into the intricate ways these silver-scale posts breach your defense and offer insight to fortify your home against their invasions.
Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are nocturnal insects, preferring the cover of darkness to infiltrate dwellings. These agile, wigless creatures are drawn to moisture and can squeeze through minuscule openings, as small as a time, to enter your home. In humid climate, such as Florida’s steady summer or British Columbia’s damp winters, silverfish populations often surge.
Silverfish find their way into houses primarily through cracks in the foundation, baseboards, and walls. They can also access homes via gaps around doors, windows, and utility pipes. Inspect these areas closely and seal any holes or services to reduce the likelihood of silverfish indentations.
Maintaining a dry environment in your home is the most effective way to discourage silverfish. Ensure proper ventilator in bathroom, kitchens, and basement, and use dehumidifiers when necessary. Regularly check for leads in plunging and appliances, and promptly repair any issues that arise.
Should you find yourself facing a silverfish infestation, several co-friendly pest control option are available. Diatomaceous earth, a natural powder derived from crushed fossilized alae, can be scattered around your home to dehydrate and kill the posts. Boris acid, when placed in strategic locations, can also prove effective in controlling silverfish populations.
